Hal Hexum, a pillar of compassion

I am going through old emails and found this one, it's too hilarious.
Here is a conversation Keri had with dad about a year ago:

Keri: Is mom home today?

Dad : No she is working.

Keri: Okay, I just called her to tell her something interesting. On wednesday, Marc and I went to Rochestor for his doctor appointment. We were very discouraged, because originally they had said Marc had a chance to live for possibly 10 to 15 years, but his chemo treatment isn' t decreasing his cancer for the last 3 months, so the numbers of 3 to 5 years were starting to come up again, and a stem cell transplant often only increases ones life for 18 months. So we were just sick and scared.
But this morning my friend was watching the Today show and Geralidine Ferrara ( former congresswoman) has multiple myeloma, and she was told she had 3 to 5 years to live, but she has tried a new drug, and it is working well, and she feels good. She was diagnosed with the cancer 9 years ago. So I am encouraged by that and wanted to tell mom looking up the article online.

Dad : Well, she will be home by 4pm. Now there is red juice on the top of my steak do you suppose it is to rare and I haven't cooked it long enough?

Your dad IS a pillar of compassion. He's always cracked me up. I remember once in high school, back when he worked there, my sister and I skipped because it was a gorgeous spring day, and we were in our back yard getting a little sun (we lived RIGHT by the high school), and suddenly he appeared out of nowhere. Amy almost pooped her pants because she was so afraid of being busted, but I felt inspired, so I started coughing like I had typhoid. Amy picked up on the hint and started coughing too and then one of us said, "I can't believe how sick we are!" and he just smiled and walked out. I think he respected our chutzpa. (or whatever that Yiddish word is)

I'm so sorry to hear about Keri's hubby. I want to know, did he go on the meds? Did he get better?

Prettiest sister? How's it going?

Last I heard is that he's on a plateau right now. Not getting worse, not getting better.

Sarah, when I read skipped, I was imagining you meant, holding hands skipping because it was a gorgeous spring day. I didn't get the part that you were skipping school. So I'm like why would my dad be in your back yard suddenly and why couldn't you be skipping in your own back yard. I'm an idiot.

Dad used to make me hold his hand and he would skip because he knew it embarrassed me.

I called Dad and I asked Dad where mom was and he said, "Well, she's not making dinner." Come to find out she was visiting her dying mother in the nursing home.
